Department of Bengali

About the department

Department of Bengali is the largest department of Sabang Sajanikanta Mahavidyalaya. This department started its glorious journey with general degree course in 1970 under the University of Calcutta. Being an affiliated college under Vidyasagar University honours course was introduced in 1996 and finally 2017 regular post graduate course in Bengali was introduced. A group of eminent teacher likes Prof. Sudhamoy Bag, Prof. Bishnupada Maity, Dr. Jaharlal Bera and others taught in the department. Their teaching and research activities glorify the department as well as the literary and cultural development of the local area.

Aims and Objectives:

  1. Grow the literary and cultural atmosphere inside and outside of the college.
  2. Grow the aesthetic sense among the students.
  3. Find out the creativity of the students.
  4. Grow the reading habit of literature among the students.
  5. Find out the new writer.
  6. Provide a literary platform for the new writer.

Goal of the department:

  1. To introduce research facilities in the department.
  2. Establish a help desk for the preparation of NET/SET, SSC.
  3. To introduce the course on language and folklore.
  4. Increase the seat capacity both UG & PG.
  5. Translate the literary work from other language.
  6. Workshop on folk culture.
  7. Programme on cultural study.

Scope of further studies:

  1. After the completion of the running course graduate students of this department may be admitted in PG courses in distance mood.
  2. After the completion of the running course honours graduate students of this department may be admitted in PG courses in Bengali, Linguistics, Folklore and Comparative Literature both regular and distance mood.
  3. After the completion of the running course post graduate students of this department may be admitted in M.Phil & Ph.D. programme in Bengali, Linguistics, Folklore and Comparative Literature .
  4. After the completion of the running course any students of this department may be admitted in B.Ed. courses.
  5. After the completion of the running course any students of this department may be admitted those courses where minimum eligible criteria are graduate.

Departmental Excellency:

  3. A large number of students get admission to the PG courses.
  4. Some students of the department get admission to the M.Phil & Ph.D.
  5. Organize some extension programme for the sociocultural development of the society.

  7. Organize national and international seminar for the uplift and advancement of knowledge.

Importance of subject:

  1. A person can enrich his/her reading and writing ability.
  2. Enrich the speaking ability.
  3. Cooperation, humanity, sympathy and other valuable virtues can grow in mind by reading the literature.
  4. Man can build his/her language capacity by reading the literature.
  5. Beauty, aesthetics, ethics and other valuable senses can grow in mind by reading the literature.
  6. By reading the literature, a man can feel the both happiness and sorrow of people.
  7. By reading the Bengali literature, man can understand the sociocultural situation of the Bengal.
  8. The skill of creative writing is increase by the study of Bengali language and literature.

Our role:

  3. We encourage the students for critical writing and research.

  5. We provide special and tutorial classes for the students.

Departmental Activities

  1. Educational Tour & Field Survey: Department organizes an educational tour cum field survey every year as a components of the syllabus of Bengali honours course. Students make project paper on the basis of this survey. Faculty members help them to survey and project paper writing. Some important subjects of undivided Medinipur like mat of Sabang, Mogalmari Bouddha Bihar, Bidisha of Narayangarh, Gaynabarhi of Purba Medinipur, Patachitra of Pingla etc. are already been survey by our departmental team.
  2. Seminar: Department organizes seminar and workshop regularly. The activities of last three years are as bellow.

  3. Publication- There are four types of publication are in our department. These are as bellow.
    1. ALO– ALO is the wall magazine of our department. It is published in every year. The students and teachers write on the wall magazine.
    2. PATISHRUTI– PATISHRUT is the students` journal of our department. It was published on and from 2017. Only the students of the department of Bengali write on this magazine.
    3. BANGABHARATI– BANGABHARATI is the departmental journal. It was published on and from 2020. Eminent personalities along with faculty members write on this journal.
    4. Faculty members individually publish research article along with text and reference books regularly.
    5. CHARCHA (Sahitya Asar): We provide a literary platform entitled “CHARCHA (Sahitya Asar)” to the students. The meeting of the CHARCHA was held regularly. The department arranges the authors meet through the CHARCHA. There are two such meet held in the department including the observation of International Mother Language Day.
    6. Cultural Programme. Department arranges cultural programmes on the occasion of Rabindra Jayanti, Baise Shraban, Antarjatik Bhasa Dibas. Apart from that various national observation days and the birthdays of eminent writer are observed by the department.
    7. Reunion of Alumni. There is a committee of the alumni in the department. Some alumni are-

      Every year they arrange alumni meet in the department. Alumni sponsor some books to the open book corner of the department.
  4. Students Guide Centre– Department takes same classes for the preparation of P.G. admission test. Some students are successfully admitted in P.G. courses through the test. Every year the students get admission many universities like Vidyasagar, Calcutta, Jadavpur, Bardwan etc. as well as some in the P.G. department of many colleges.
  5. Sabuj Senani. A student forum entitles “Sabuj Senani” are exist in the department. Students of the department devote themselves to serve the department. They help to the teacher for cleaning, preparation of cultural programme, organize of seminar and special classes etc.
  6. Banga Satra. A help desk of the department of Bengali is “Banga Satra”. Any students of the college get help about language, literature and cultural activities. Through this gateway the department try to communicate with outside of the college and try to spread the literary and cultural activities to develop the culture of the local society.
  7. Mentor-Mentee: Mentor-Mentee system is already introduced in the department. The mentor take care about the students. Department try to solve the problems initially by action research.
  8. Parents Meet: Parent-Teacher meeting is held semester wise and class wise. But the response from the guardians is very poor. We like to contact with the guardian personal level for the better progress of the students.

Facilities

  1. Folk Museum. A folk museum is situated in the department of Bengali. Some folk art and craft from the local area are collected. We try to enrich the museum by associate the more folk elements from the rural Bengal.
  2. Manuscript Section. There is a well decorated Manuscript Section in the department. Students may skilled on manuscripts reading. Special classes are arranged on manuscripts reading.
  3. Departmental Library. There are more than 200 number of books for the department of Bengali are available in the departmental library of the college. Students use these books regularly.
  4. Open Book Corner. An open book corner was established in the department of Bengali. Some respected person along with the faculty members of the department donated the book here for the students. The total lending system of books from the open book corner is done by the students of the department.
  5. Language Learning. Department arrange some programme on language learning. Only the students of the departments can join in this programme. The languages are-
    1. Indian language- Oriya, Assamese.

  6. Invited Lecture. Department arrange invited lectures to enrich the students for advancement from the specific syllabus. Eminent teachers from reputed universities deliver lecture in our department. They are-

  7. Group Teaching: As a component of new policy of class teaching we provide the special class according to the level of the student. A group of teachers teach together in a specific class in a single topic at a time. In this way department try to reduce the lack of teaching.
  8. Peer Education & Group Discussion: Most effective method of teaching in the class is peer education and group discussion. In tutorial classes we want that the students will be active in group discussion.
  9. Internet. Internet connection are available in the department. This connection is fully free for the students and teachers.
  10. ICT Enable Class Room: There are two ICT enable class room in the department of Bengali. Teachers use the projector for in the classes.
  11. Virtual Class Room: There is virtual class room in our college centrally. Department of Bengali may also use it.

Computer Laboratory: There is computer laboratory in our college centrally. The students of the department of Bengali may also use it.

Library & e-Resource

  1. Central Library. There are more than 2500 number of books for the department of Bengali are available in the central library of the college. Some of them are unavailable in the market now. Departmental Library. There are more than 200 number of books for the department of Bengali are available in the departmental library of the college. Students use these books regularly.
  2. Open Book Corner. An open book corner was established in the department of Bengali. Some respected person along with the faculty members of the department donated the book here for the students. The total lending system of books from the open book corner is done by the students of the department.
  3. E-Books. More than 8000 books are available in the department of Bengali in soft form. Student can use them in computer as well as get Xerox copy also.
  4. Other Resource: Class notes, model answer, critical essay and so many other study materials are available from the department.
