About the department
Since its commencement in the year 1971, the principal aim of this department has been to engineer the students of this department to cope up with the changing societal realities through the dissemination of knowledge. Working on the objective of imparting quality knowledge in commerce to the students, the department has been able to make possible the cultivation of interest in higher studies and academic research.
Vision and Mission:
The vision of this department belongs to exploring the commerce study & investigation, policy framing & execution issues confronted by the India and rest of the world. This department flourishes to grasp the substance of peculiarity in teaching-learning, investigation & annexe. This department tries to develop itself into a world class centre of excellence in the fields of Business and Commerce through value based education, training & research.
The mission of this department are many-sided, like, to inspire and empower the students to become innovative leaders, contribute to the success of organizations and betterment of communities to provide quality education in the paddock of Commerce and mould the students to ensemble the national concern with social obligation, to bestow the students of Commerce to explore the local, national and global economic trends, and to equip students with the skills needed to adapt better to the changing global scenario and gain access to multiple career opportunities .
Teaching Method:
Teaching method includes classroom teaching, individual and group interactions with the teaching staff outside the class room, lecture exhibition and students’ seminar, project work, etc.
Method of Evaluation:
The department follows the continuous system for evaluation of the students through internal examinations and University Examination.
Course Offered
The Department offers undergraduate honours course and undergraduate generic course. The curriculum and syllabus of these courses is under CBCS with the affiliation of Vidyasagar University.

Departmental Activities
Apart from the regular classes, the teachers arrange review classes to assess the understanding of the students on the core concept of concerned area of the subject. Special tutorial classes are given on the weaker area of the students. Assignments are also given and checked regularly. We have a system of formal class tests whose score is recorded in order to check the trend of the performance of the students. The department also arranges remedial classes for the slow learners. Students are encouraged to participate in various seminars organized by the college.
Industrial Visit:
To give an exposure to students to the larger world of Information Technology and to the world of industry, Industrial visits are being arranged at appropriate occasions. Industrial training programme of 4 to 5 days is organized by the university on annual basis, the Mahavidyalaya take part in this training program.
Co-Curricular Activities:
For their development taken as a whole the students of this department are encouraged to take part in different co-curricular activities like interdepartmental and college level sports meets, youth parliament competition and cultural competitions. To enhance their surveillance and investigative power, students are motivated to take on rural surveys.

Departmental meeting is regularly held to discuss the different issues of related to academic issues of the department.

- Inventiveness for taking up research projects in the department.

- Organize special lectures for the students to develop their general knowledge enhancement which will assist them in self-development and getting better future career.

SWOC Analysis of the Department
Strengths:
- Nice co-ordination among all the teaching staff of the department
- Moderate collection of e-resources
- Sophisticated collection of reference books in the seminar library
- Arrangement of remedial classes on regular basis
- ICT based classroom
Weaknesses:
- Most of the students come from poor and backward family and thereby cannot attend classes regularly as they are to provide economic support to their family.
- Deficiency of teaching staff in relation to huge burden class to cope up with the needs of CBCS syllabus.
- Absence of academic support staff to the department.
- The gradual decline of the number of students to the Under-Graduate courses of Commerce due to the lack of knowledge of the vast potential of commerce as well as due to the lack of employable opportunities in governmental teaching posts.
Library & e-Resource
- Seminar Library: The Department has a rich source of books on the subject in its seminar library, with a good number of varieties. Not only syllabus oriented textbooks, the seminar library of Commerce consists of various reference books and a wide range of books covering diverse disciplines of Commerce that will definitely serve the purpose of enriching the students and guiding them to develop a better understanding of the subject. Students can have easy access of the books for reading and also facility of lending of books offered to them.

- Access to Web-resources: MOOCs (massive open online courses) are offered for free to anyone wishing to learn. This is one of the most useful online student resources. Teaching faculties encouraged and guide the graduate students to avail the courses helpful to them.

4. Mentor-Mentee and its output/feedback: ‘Mentoring System’ is a new process that has been established in our department. During their course of journey students often need mentoring, guidance and counseling. Direct academic issues e.g. selection of electives can be easily communicated to the student. Each Faculty will be the mentor of a group of students.
Mentors have to perform some responsibilities
- The mentors guide and motivate the students in all academic matters.
- The mentors communicate with the parents/guardians if situation demands e.g. for academic irregularities, negative behavioral changes and detrimental activities.

5. Community outreach programme: Students are encouraged to enroll their names in NSS cell of the Mahavidyalaya and to participate in the various extension activities organized by the college.
