About the department

The Department has been consistently following a modernized method of teaching, with national and state-level seminars and webinars and audio- visual techniques, over and above classroom teaching. This Department is furnished with satisfying educational and infrastructural facilities This department started its glorious journey with general degree course in 1970 under the University of Calcutta. Being an affiliated college under Vidyasagar University honours course was introduced in 2003 and finally in 2017 regular post graduate course in English was introduced. A group of qualified & eminent teachers taught in the department. Their teaching activities glorify the department as well as the literary and cultural development of the local area.

Aims and Objectives:

  1. Grow the literary and cultural atmosphere inside and outside of the college.
  2. Grow the aesthetic sense among the students.
  3. Find out the creativity of the students.
  4. Grow the reading habit of literature among the students.

Goal of the department:

  1. To help the students to develop their personality.
  2. Establish a help desk for the preparation of NET/SET.
  3. To introduce the course on language.
  4. Increase the seat capacity for both UG and P.G.

Scope of further studies:

  1. After the completion of the running course graduate students of this department may be admitted in PG courses in both regular and distance mode.
  2. After the completion of the running course post graduate students of this department may be admitted in M .Phil & Ph.D. programme in English.
  3. After the completion of the running course any students of this department may be admitted in B.Ed. courses.
  4. After the completion of the running course any students of this department may be admitted those courses where minimum eligible criteria are graduate.

Departmental Excellency:

  1. A large number of students scored first class both UG & PG level.
  2. A large number of students already engaged in job at school, college and office.
  3. A large number of students get admission to the PG courses.
  4. Organize some extension programme for the sociocultural development of the society.
  5. Organize some special lecture about the broad area of the subject.
  6. Organize national and international seminar for the uplift and advancement of knowledge.

Importance of subject:

  1. A person can enrich his/her reading and writing ability.
  2. Enrich the speaking ability.
  3. Cooperation, humanity, sympathy and other valuable virtues can grow in mind by reading the literature.
  4. Man can build his/her language capacity by reading the literature.
  5. Beauty, aesthetics, ethics and other valuable senses can grow in mind by reading the literature.
  6. By reading the literature, a man can feel the both happiness and sorrow of people.
  7. The skill of creative writing is increased by the study of English language and literature.

Departmental Activities

  1. Educational Tour & Field Survey: Department organizes an educational tour cum field survey every year as a components of the syllabus of English honours course. Students make project paper on the basis of this survey. Faculty members help them to survey and project paper writing.
  2. Seminar: Department organizes seminar regularly. The activities of last three years are as bellow.

  3. Publication- here are constant encouragement for the students to nurture their creativity and aesthetics feelings. Our Department’s wall magazine is one of them.
    1. HORIZON- HORIZON is the wall magazine of our department. The students and teachers write on the wall magazine.
  4. Mentor-Mentee: Mentor-Mentee system is already introduced in the department. The mentor take care about the students. Department try to solve the problems. Mentor- Mentee Group in each semester is very important for the overall development of students .It bridges the gap between the faculties and students. Mentoring provides students emotional and instrumental support, guidance, encouragement and better environment in college. A Mentor plays a vital role in nurturing students and has a positive impact on student’s persistence and academic achievement .It is conducted to help students to strengthen their varied capabilities and to build an intrapersonal relationship between the faculties and students.
  5. Parent-Teacher Meet: Parent-Teacher meeting is held semester wise and class wise. But the response from the guardians is very poor. We like to contact with the guardian personal level for the better progress of the students.

Facilities

  1. Departmental Library: There are more than 100 books for the department of English available in the departmental library of the college. Students use these books regularly. Teachers supply books to students and guide them properly.
  2. Internet: Internet connection are available in the department. This connection is fully free for the students and teachers.
  3. ICT Enabled Class Room: There are one ICT enabled class room in the department of English.. Teachers use the projector for in the classes.
  4. Virtual Class Room: There is virtual class room in our college centrally. Department of English may also use it.
  5. Computer Laboratory: There is computer laboratory in our college centrally. The students of the department of English may also use it.

Library & e-Resource

  1. Central Library. There are more than 2500 number of books for the department of English are available in the central library of the college. Some of them are unavailable in the market now.
  2. Departmental Library. There are more than 60 number of books for the department of English are available in the departmental library of the college. Students use these books regularly.
  3. E-Books. More than 450 books are available in the department of English in soft copy. Student can use them in computer as well as get Xerox copy also.
  4. Other Resource: Class notes, model answer, critical essay and so many other study materials are available from the department.

Filmature: Film festival is organized in the department. Film and literature are artistic expression of human mind. Man thinks of different ways of communicating human experiences to broaden the enlightenment scenario. Obviously, there is an interesting connection between filming and writing.

The Department of English celebrated a film festival ‘ Filmature” to commemorate the 406th Death anniversary of William Shakespeare. This endeavour creates ideas among students about the broadening canvas of literature and make them aware to the scope of newly established field of study “ Film and Literature”. The festival is held at Auditorium Hall from 5th May to 7th May. In this Festival famous films such as Mackbeth, Alice in Wonderland , The Guide are screened. All the students and teachers of English department participate in this festival.
