About the department

In today’s world of globalization, knowledge is the ultimate source of power. The ability of enhancement of renovating the information into knowledge by analyzing the emerging trends is the key factor for acquiring this power. The power of knowledge brings forth the development of an individual as well as the Geography as a whole. Geography is the study of how society manages its scarce sosaity. The knowledge of Geography creates the opportunity for the individual to appreciate the minutiae of this new whole universe where efficiency is the ultimatum. For a graduate students in geography, there exists ample job opportunities. The Graduate Department of Geography is a premier department in the Faculty of Science of Sabang Sajanikanta Mahavidyalaya. We, the teaching staff of this Department, are trying our level best to prepare the students of this department so that they can enjoy the benefit of studying Geography.

Mission and Vision of the Department:

Since its inception in 2008 the department has been copious rural predisposition to its programmes of graduate teaching, especially for field survey / projects. Working on the objective of imparting quality knowledge in Geography to the students, the department has been able to make possible the cultivation of interest in higher studies and academic research.

The mission of this department are many-sided, like, to provide quality education in the paddock of Geography and mould the students to ensemble the national concern with social obligation, to bestow the students of Geographar to explore the local, national and global geographycal trends, and to educate them to engage in collective odd jobs as well as to come up to good future career.

The vision of this department belongs to exploring the geographycal swot up & investigation, policy framing & execution issues confronted by the Indian geography and rest of the world geography. This department flourishes to grasp the substance of peculiarity in teaching-learning, investigation & annexe. This department tries to keep up with the escalating demand for knowledgeable human capital in state-owned sector, non-government sector and other sectors as well as fostering academic researches in the field of geography.

Teaching Method:

Teaching method includes classroom teaching, individual and group interactions with the teaching staff outside the class room, lecture exhibition and students’ seminar, project work, etc.

Method of Evaluation:

The department follows the continuous system for evaluation of the students through internal examinations and University Examination.

Opportunities before Geography Discipline:

Geography is a subject which has ample job opportunities in diversified fields, viz., EIA, Union & State Civil Services, Reserve Bank of India, Commercial Banks, NSSO, BASE, CSSO, Remotesenssing & G.I.S., Planning Commission, WEATHER STATION, Teaching job, and Private sector job,

Challenges Ahead before Geography Discipline:

It is too challenging to teach a dynamic subject- Geography. Another remarkable challenge for this department at present is to create demand for the subject locally among the potential students.

Future Plans of the Department:

  1. Advanced use of sophisticated ICT technology in teaching & learning process.
  2. Making the teaching-learning course of action more interactive by organizing departmental seminar frequently.
  3. To initiate extension activities with a view to promote regional rural development in collaboration with local gram panchayat.

Course Offered

The Department offers undergraduate honours course and undergraduate generic course. The curriculum and syllabus of these courses is under CBCS with the affiliation of Vidyasagar University.

Departmental Activities

Apart from the regular classes, the teachers arrange review classes to assess the understanding of the students on the core concept of concerned area of the subject. Special tutorial classes are given on the weaker area of the students. Assignments are also given and checked regularly. We have a system of formal class tests whose score is recorded in order to check the trend of the performance of the students. The department also arranges remedial classes for the slow learners. Students are encouraged to participate in various seminars organized by the college.

Co-Curricular Activities:

For their development taken as a whole the students of this department are encouraged to take part in different co-curricular activities like interdepartmental and college level sports meets and cultural competitions. To enhance their surveillance and investigative power, students are motivated to take on rural surveys.

Departmental meeting is regularly held to discuss the different issues of related to academic issues of the department.

Articles by teachers & students on different contemporary topics in Geography are visited time to time.

Mentor-Mentee and its output/feedback: :

‘Mentoring System’ is a new process that has been established in our department. During their course of journey students often need mentoring, guidance and counseling. Direct academic issues e.g. selection of electives can be easily communicated to the student. Each Faculty will be the mentor of a group of students.

Mentors have to perform some responsibilities::

  1. The mentors guide and motivate the students in all academic matters.
  2. The mentors communicate with the parents/guardians if situation demands e.g. for academic irregularities, negative behavioral changes and detrimental activities.

Strengths:

  1. Nice co-ordination among all the teaching staff of the department

Weaknesses:

  1. The students having very little/lack of knowledge on H.S pure Mathematics and English take admission in this department where sound knowledge of those two subjects are very much essential.
  2. Deficiency of teaching staff in relation to huge burden class to cope up with the needs of CBCS syllabus.
  3. Absence of academic support staff to the department.

Seminar & Workshop

  1. Seminar Library: The Department has a small library with moderate collection of text books and reference books (total 38 books). The service is offered mainly to the students studying Geography Hons. The department has a rich source of books on the subject in its seminar library, with a good number of varieties. Not only syllabus oriented textbooks, the seminar library of Geography consists of various reference books and a wide range of books covering diverse disciplines of Geography that will definitely serve the purpose of enriching the students and guiding them to develop a better understanding of the subject. Students can have easy access of the books for reading and also facility of lending of books offered to them.
  2. Access to Web-resources: MOOCs (massive open online courses) are offered for free to anyone wishing to learn. This is one of the most useful online student resources. Teaching faculties encouraged and guide the graduate students to avail the courses helpful to them.
