Department of Physics
About the department
Aims & Objectives of the department:
Science can clear the fields on which technology can build. Science is about understanding, reasoning and improving the natural world through systematic observation, experimentation, modelling and calculation. The study of physics provides students with an understanding of systems that is the basic of the development of technological applications. Studying Physics at Sabang Sajanikanta Mahavidyalaya can provide you with the Golden opportunity to harness the skills and knowledge necessary to make a real contribution to the challenges facing the world today.
Goal of the Department:
The goal of the physics department to provide the student with a broad understanding of the physical principles of the universe, to help them develop critical thinking and quantitative reasoning skills, to empower them to think creatively and critically about scientific problems and experiments, and to provide training for students planning careers in physics and in physical sciences broadly defined, including those interests lie in research, or college teaching, industrial jobs, or other sectors of our society.
Scope of further studies and interdisciplinary perspectives and opportunities for career development.:
Physics graduates have a wealth of career opportunities open to them. With a Bachelor or Post graduate of Science degree in Physics, students can pursue careers in research and development, science, engineering, education, medicine, law, business, the military and various education sectors. Current students can take advantage of the many research and internship opportunities available to them for the career of their choice.
Importance of the subject in the field of entire education system:
Physics is an important element in education of chemists, engineers and computer scientists, as well as practitioners of the other physical and biomedical sciences. Physics extends and enhances our understanding of other disciplines, such as the earth, agricultural, chemical, biological, and environmental sciences, plus astrophysics and cosmology- subjects of substantial importance to all peoples of the world.
Our roles:
The subject, Physics under the department in Sabang Sajanikanta Mahavidyalaya, affiliated to Vidyasagar University was established in 1985 with an ambition to pursue high level teaching methodologies and top-notch research in advanced areas of experimental and theoretical physics and interdisciplinary areas of science and technology. The department starts out its journey to teach Under Graduate Physics under Culcutta University in the year 1980 as well as Post Graduate physics under Vidyasagar University in the year 2017 with sincere and experienced faculty. The department has well equipped teaching laboratories including modern experimental set ups for achieving high standards in learning. The curriculum is framed in such a way that students are able to achieve sound theoretical foundation and problem solving skills and exposure. A range of M. Sc. Project (in Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, S N Bose National Centre for basic Science ), areas is provided. M.Sc. students are given hands on training in all aspects of the subject being taught from computation to sophisticated experiments. We encourage our students to present their work in conferences and to publish their work in journals. We do give much emphasis to presentation skills and train students to appear for National Level Exams. Our PG programme is running with renowned professors as well as famous guest teachers who come from different colleges (Under VU & CU) to share their huge knowledge with the students.

Departmental Activities
- Mention all other than regular teaching & learning as per time table: Project works by all the students of PG Sem IV, UG 3rd year (Hons & General), UG Sem VI (Hons).
- Extra-curricular activities of the departments: Nil
- Observation day celebration: Teachers’ day Celebration, Fresher’s Welcome Ceremony
- Special occasion: No
- Departmental Meeting, it’s aims and Objectives, Schedules, Feedback and action taken : Regularly held departmental meeting to discuss the different issues of related to academic purpose.
- Mentor-Mentee, nurture and its Feedback : ‘Mentoring System’ is a new process that has been established in our department. During their course of journey students often need mentoring, guidance and counselling. Direct academic issues e.g. selection of electives can be easily communicated to the student. Each Faculty will be the mentor of a group students.
- dfdfdf
Mentors have to perform some responsibilities:
- The mentors guide and motivate the students in all academic matters.
- The mentors communicate with the parents/guardians if situation demands e.g. for academic irregularities, negative behavioral changes and detrimental activities.

Thrust Area
The Sabang Sajanikanta Mahavidyalaya provides specialized equipments, software and infrastructure for Post Graduate in Physics students. High quality specialised labs are established in the college to encourage the students for choice specialisation and innovative works. In keeping with its ethos, the college facilitates interdisciplinary way.
In addition, for their work initiated and conducted in this college, faculty have received research and travel grants from reputed external organisations.
In post graduate teaching, the most sophisticated, modern and application based area “Applied Electronics” are taught here.
‘Project based learning’ is a good practice in our department for both UG & PG students. Besides this regularly the students are going to the other Institute for their project work e.g. Vidyasagar University, Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics & Narajole Raj College.
