About the department

Political Science Department was established in the year 1980. At that time only pass-course was offered as a part of academic curriculum. Honours Course was introduced in the year 1996. At present two full-time Assistant Professors and three State Aided College Teachers are engaged in teaching and Co-curricular activities of the Department. Our Department is one of the largest departments of this college. From the time of inception the academic result of the Department has been consistently good.

Goals of the Department:

The sole aim of the department is to prepare the students of this department so that they can have a better understanding of the present political set up in our home state as well as in India. The motto is to prepare them as the future citizens, who will have a better understanding of the political issues and will not detach morality from politics to have a better grasp of ever changing socio-political realities, through the dissemination of knowledge. Working on the objective of imparting holistic knowledge of present political scenario to the students, the department is ever effortful in making possible the cultivation of interest in higher studies and academic research.

Scope of further studies:

The knowledge of Political Science is indispensable for today’s world. Every year 20-30 per cent of graduate students from this department go for higher studies, for pursuing their Master degrees in various Universities.

Teaching Method:

Teaching method includes classroom teaching, individual and group interactions with the teachers outside the class room, lecture exhibition and students’ seminar. In the wake of the recent Pandemic (COVID-19) we recently have developed e-platform like Google classroom for imparting knowledge and student-teacher online interactions. Platforms like Zoom Video Conference and Google Meet have vividly been explored for conducting e-classes. The students’ response was very encouraging.

Method of Evaluation:

As per the guidance provided by the University, the department follows the continuous system for evaluation of the students through internal examinations and University Examination.

Participation in extra-curricular activities:

The Department, from the very beginning has always inspired the students, not only of this department, but from all the departments of the Mahavidyalaya to participate in debate competitions, YPC, essay writing competitions, etc.

Importance of the Subject:

It is a well known fact that we live in a political world and no one is above its impact. So, in case of academic study and competitive exams also, the knowledge of political science and global politics, in a word is indispensable.

Our Roles:

The Department along with impairment of knowledge is keen on preparing future generations of citizens and leaders who will show their ability to keep intact the democratic values as espoused by our great Constitution. They will surely acquire the potentiality to understand the nuances of better policy making and keeping intact the nuts and bolts of a democratic political system.

Departmental Activities

The objective of the Department is to help our students to acquire knowledge about the subject as per Vidyasagar University syllabus. To help them to become good citizen as well as help and guide them to earn a descent livelihood.

  1. Apart from methodical classroom teaching, the Department arranges for educational visits and tours, so that pupils can get better scope to be acquainted with our larger society.
  2. From the formation years, the Department has actively taken part in Youth Parliament Competition, has provided necessary training, arranged for long workshops to equip them with the skills required for participating in these competitions. And to the much joy of the Department, success came successively.
  3. Along with this the Department from the year 2013, has published a wall magazine annually, prepared by the students with their active participation. This has also helped to develop in themselves the skill of content writing and writing articles related to their field.
  4. From time to time the Department has organised for various social and public health related awareness programmes. For example, “Door to Door Dengue Awareness Campaign”.
  5. Along with these the Department prepare its future plan through the regular holding of departmental meetings, where discussions include teaching-learning, distribution and completion of syllabus, holding of internal exams, preparation for tutorials, remedial teaching, providing question-answer to the students and about evaluation.
  6. Mentor-Mentee and its output/feedback: ‘Mentoring System’ is a new process that has been established in our department. During their course of journey students often need mentoring, guidance and counseling. Direct academic issues e.g. selection of electives can be easily communicated to the student. Each Faculty member will be the mentor of a group of students.

Mentors have to perform some responsibilities:

  1. The mentors guide and motivate the students in all academic matters.
  2. The mentors communicate with the parents/guardians if situation demands e.g. for academic irregularities, negative behavioral changes and detrimental activities.

Library & e-Resource

In the Central Library more than 2500 books related to this subject are available. Mode of Issue- Two books at a time preferable for a period of 15 days. The Department also has its own library which is quite rich in collection. Students and teachers normally consult the departmental library as well as the central library which is quite rich in old and new books.

e-Resource: The Department has developed a rich collection of e-books and periodicals which may prove handy for students.

e-Contents: Class notes are being uploaded on regular basis at the Google Classroom. Handouts are also available at the website of the department. The Department is currently under process and ready to come up with all sorts of e-content to better the study experience of the students shortly.

Seminar & Workshop

  1. Departmental Seminar: Nil
  2. National Level Seminar: The Department has organized one national level self-financed seminar in collaboration with IQAC and other Department of Bengali of the college. The title of the seminar was ‘Bange Gandhi Charcha’.(2/09/19)
  3. International Level Seminar: The Department has organized one international level self-financed seminar in collaboration with IQAC and other Departments of the college. The title of the seminar was ‘Empowerment of Women: From the Perspective of Attaining Gender Parity and Social Justice’.(16/03/18)
  4. Invited Lectures: The Department has plans for conducting departmental seminars/webinars at regular basis to facilitate the learning process of the pupils.
  5. Faculty Lectures/Acted as resource person: Smt Sunita Mitra Sarkar has delivered an invited lecture, titled ‘Decision Making: Herbert Simon’ on 02/05/2019 at the Department of Political Science, West Bengal State University, West Bengal.
  6. Innovative Programme of the Department: On 7th November, 2017, the Department of Political Science organized a ‘Door to Door Dengue Awareness Campaign’ in Lutunia. We have future plans to organise such programmes.

  8. Community outreach programme: Students are encouraged to enroll their names in NSS and NCC cells of the Mahavidyalaya and to participate in the various extension activities organized by the college.

Thrust Area

  1. Presently Department of Political Science has the most promising faculty members with Specialization in Indian State and Politics, International Relations, Political Sociology and Local Self Government. Well furnished department with Departmental Library, Internet and Wi-Fi facility. Teacher-student bonding is very strong.
  2. It has organised two seminars, one national and one international successfully.
  3. Will be conducting Departmental and Students’ Seminar/Webinars on regular basis.
  4. It has plans for setting-up a permanent body of advisers and trainers who will look after the preparations of students throughout the year, participating in various competitions.
  5. Purchasing more relevant books for Departmental Library.
